Chapter SIXTEEN

EMILY

I can’t believe that Richard found us, but I’m thrilled that he did and he’s well.

I’m not the only one feeling grateful. The moment we enter the cave, Simon rushes to us and hugs Richard.

“We thought you were gone!” he says. “I’m so happy that you’re okay.”

Richard looks very weak, and he can barely raise his arms to hold Simon, but I notice that he smiles.

“I thought you didn’t care if I lived or died,” Richard mumbles.

Simon hugs him tighter. “We’re family. Of course, I care about you.”

When I look around, Susana is by my side. “Where did you find him?”

“He found us,” I reply before turning to look at Simon and rubbing down his back. “Honey, let Richard go. He’s exhausted and needs to change clothes.”

Simon steps back and inspects Richard’s chest. “The wound is healed. There’s just a red mark. But he’s freezing.”

“My clothes got ruined with the fall. I just need to sit by the fire,” Richard says with a weak voice.

“I’ll help you sit, and I’ll lend you one of my sweaters,” Simon says, holding Richard’s arm and helping him walk.

I walk beside them and notice that Tai is back in the cave, holding the stick with the rabbit to roast over the fire. Song is seated next to him, snapping twigs into tiny pieces of wood and throwing them at the fire.

“What are they doing here?” Richard asks, looking at Song and Tai.

“After your fall, we found them in the woods,” Simon explains. “The Sovereign forced them to participate in the trial.”

“But they aren’t Emily’s men.” Richard protests.

“I’m not happy about this either,” Tai mutters as he glances at Richard.

“They have been helpful,” Antoine says from behind Richard and Simon. “We’ll talk about this later. Now you need to change clothes and get warm.”

Susana leaves my side and squats beside Tai, who glances at her with a surprised expression.

Her eyes are shining when she asks him, “If I create a shield in front of the cave, it will prevent not just the wild animals but also the rain and the wind from coming in?”

“An inclusive shield is harder to create than one that only prevents living creatures from entering a determined space,” Tai replies.

“Inclusive shield?” she asks.

“A shield that protects you from everything, even water and wind.”

“Can you teach me?”

“We’ll need a few rocks to use as magical conductors.”

I ignore their talk, hoping that Susana and Tai can find a way to keep us safer and warmer, and I search for Richard and Simon.

Richard’s seated on a rock near the bed of leaves that Song had built while Simon fumbles inside his backpack.

A hand surrounds my shoulders, startling me.

“Easy, it’s just me,” Antoine whispers.

I grab his hand and relax.

“Why aren’t you with them?” he asks. “You were extremely worried about Richard.”

“Did you see Simon’s face when he saw Richard?”

Glancing back, I catch Antoine’s smirk. “It seems that Richard had to almost die for him to forgive him and stop acting cold around him.”

“Simon was suffering like I was.
